Ever wondered why you are cautioned against exercising immediately after a meal? Well, that's cause it affects your digestion.

When you exercise most of the blood supply is directed to your muscles and lungs and this in turn reduces the blood supply to the intestines.

Further, you might experience cramping and bloating. Diet plays a vital role for athletes. Not paying attention to it can lead to gastrointestinal troubles such as Runner's diarrhea - characterized by frequent, loose bowel movements during or immediately after a run.

Things to take note of -

  1. A heavy meal rich in proteins and fats takes a minimum of 2-3 hours to digest.

  2. Meals with higher proportion of fats typically takes longer time to digest.

  3. Keeping yourself hydrated is essential.

A day before a run (marathon) -

  1. Avoid high fiber as well as gas producing food such as beans.

  2. Avoid sugar substitutes, caffeine and high fat foods.

Ideally, give yourself enough time to digest your food.

Exercising regularly is immensely beneficial to your body but do so in moderation.

Space your meal and exercise at least 3 hours apart.

Take foods high in carbohydrates, low in fats.

Walk for good digestion?

After a light meal or a snack you can go for a walk.

After a heavy meal, it is suggested that you wait for at least an hour before setting off.

However, it is important that you avoid any high impact activities.
